Built for winter, ready for OTR
Owner-Operator CDL-A OTR Jobs in North Dakota
Forty below on I-94 outside Jamestown. Ground blizzards on I-29 that erase the road. Drivers in North Dakota deal with conditions most of the country only reads about, and that kind of judgment travels well. Add the Bakken oil patch in the west and the grain and sugar beet traffic of the Red River Valley, and you have a state that produces serious drivers and serious freight.

How our owner-operator program works
01
Year-round contracting
No hiring windows. No seasonal pause when the roads ice over. If you live in North Dakota and qualify, the recruiting team wants to hear from you whenever you are ready, as an independent contractor.
02
Rental, never lease-purchase
The tractor is rental equipment. MB Global does not run a lease-purchase program and you will not be buying a truck from us. Keep that in mind if you are comparing offers.
03
OTR, 2 to 3 weeks out
All freight is over the road. The pattern we suggest is 2 to 3 weeks out followed by a few days at home, whether home is Fargo, Minot or a farm outside Dickinson. Nothing about miles or home time is promised.
Freight corridors OTR drivers run from North Dakota
Two very different economies drive freight in North Dakota. West of Bismarck, the Bakken region around Williston and Dickinson keeps tanker, flatbed and equipment haulers busy. East of it, the Red River Valley is grain and sugar beet country, with Fargo and Grand Forks as the main hubs. The May 2025 BLS data shows a median wage of $60,910 for heavy and tractor-trailer drivers in the state, above the national median, and state projections call for about 6.9 percent growth in this job from 2024 to 2034. Fargo, where I-94 and I-29 cross, is the natural jumping off point for loads headed east.
I-94 is the east and west road, running from Fargo through Jamestown, Bismarck and Dickinson into Montana. I-29 carries north and south traffic through Fargo and Grand Forks all the way to the Canadian border, and south into South Dakota and toward Sioux Falls. US-2 links Grand Forks, Minot and Williston across the top of the state, and US-85 is the main oil field route through the west. Most OTR loads out of the state leave by I-94 east or I-29 south.
Winter driving across North Dakota
Blizzards can close roads here, including long stretches of I-94 and I-29, sometimes for a day or more. The ND Travel Information Map shows current conditions and closures. Look at it before every departure between November and April, and have a plan for where you will wait it out.

Openings a year
In May 2025, BLS counted 11,870 heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers in North Dakota. The median wage was $60,910 a year, above the U.S. figure of $58,640. For 2024 to 2034, state projections show employment moving from 11,750 to 12,560, or about 1,300 openings a year. These figures cover wage and salary drivers, not owner-operator earnings. An independent contractor's result is a separate question that depends on expenses and how much freight you pull.
Orientation, travel and lodging
Orientation
Remote modules you finish at home, then in-person time at our terminal.
Lodging
Lodging during in-person orientation is paid in full by MB Global.
Travel
Flights or other travel are booked and paid by MB Global up front, then charged back at $50 per week on settlements.
Coming from Fargo, Bismarck or Minot, you will do the remote part of orientation first, without leaving the state. Then you travel to our terminal to finish in person. MB Global covers lodging there completely. Travel is a different arrangement: MB Global books it and pays up front, and $50 per week is deducted from your settlements afterward. Ask the recruiter how many weeks and how it is itemized.

A breakdown of your driving experience by equipment type.
Accidents and traffic convictions in the past 3 years, and any license suspension, revocation or denial.
A current DOT medical card.

North Dakota owner-operator FAQs
What if I-94 is closed when I am supposed to leave on a run?
You wait. North Dakota closes interstates during blizzards and nobody expects you to drive through a gate. Check the ND Travel Information Map before you roll and let MB Global know. OTR trips last weeks, not hours, so a weather delay at the start is manageable as long as you communicate.
I run oil field work in the Bakken now. Is OTR a big change?
Yes, in rhythm more than skill. Oil field hauling on US-85 tends to be local or regional with nightly returns. OTR with MB Global means 2 to 3 weeks on the road, then a few days at home. If you have at least 2 years of OTR experience in your history already, you know the difference and can decide whether it fits.
Do you really contract North Dakota drivers in the dead of winter?
Yes. There are no hiring windows and no seasonal pauses. MB Global contracts with owner-operators who live in North Dakota in every month of the year. The only things that matter are the requirements: Class A CDL, 2 years OTR, no DUI or DWI, no SAP history, a current DOT medical card, and a home address in the state.
How do I get to orientation from Williston or Minot?
MB Global arranges the travel and pays for it up front, whatever the route. It is then recovered at $50 per week from your settlements, so ask the recruiter how many weeks that covers and how the line item reads. The first part of orientation is remote anyway, so you only travel for the in-person portion at our terminal.
Is the job outlook for drivers in North Dakota growing or shrinking?
Growing, modestly. State projections for 2024 to 2034 show about 6.9 percent growth, with employment moving from 11,750 to 12,560 and roughly 1,300 openings a year. The median wage of $60,910 is above the national median. Remember these are wage and salary figures and do not describe what an owner-operator clears after expenses.
Does a DUI from years ago disqualify me?
Yes. MB Global does not contract with drivers who have a DUI or DWI on record, regardless of how long ago it happened. The same applies to any SAP history. The MVR, past employer checks and Clearinghouse query during the federal application would surface it, so there is no point in going through the full application if this applies to you.
