Crossroads of America, OTR

Owner-Operator CDL-A OTR Jobs in Indiana

Four interstates meet in Indianapolis. Chicago is up I-65, Louisville is down it, and Cincinnati, Columbus and Detroit are all close. That is the practical meaning of Crossroads of America for an OTR driver: wherever the load is going, the first leg out of Indiana is short. You spend your hours covering ground, not getting to it.

How our owner-operator program works

01

Your own business

Drivers on this program are independent contractors. You are not on anyone's payroll, you keep your own books, and MB Global pays you on settlement the way a contractor is paid, with no payroll in between.

02

No lease-purchase here

Trucks are rental equipment, full stop. MB Global does not finance tractors and does not sell them to drivers. The truck is yours to run while you are contracted, never yours to buy.

03

Runs are OTR

Expect to be out 2 to 3 weeks, then home in Indiana for a few days. That is the recommended rhythm, not a promise. Miles, pay and home time are never set in advance on this program.

Freight corridors OTR drivers run from Indiana

Indianapolis is the hub. I-65, I-69, I-70 and I-74 converge there, and the ring of suburbs, Plainfield, Whitestown, Greenwood, is wall to wall distribution centers. Up in the northwest corner, the steel mills around Gary sit beside the Indiana Toll Road, which carries Chicago freight east toward Ohio. The Ports of Indiana add cargo at Burns Harbor on Lake Michigan and at Jeffersonville and Mount Vernon on the Ohio River. One more point from the May 2025 BLS data: the median wage for this job in Indiana is above the national median.

I-65 is the north to south workhorse, from Gary through Indianapolis to Louisville. I-70 crosses east to west, Richmond to Indianapolis to Terre Haute and on to Illinois. I-69 connects Fort Wayne, Indianapolis and Evansville. Along the top of the state, I-80/90 is the Indiana Toll Road, and I-94 handles the lake shore traffic between Chicago and Michigan. Pick any direction and there is a major route within an hour of most Indiana towns.

What to know on Indiana roads

511IN reports conditions on every interstate in the state. The Indiana Toll Road carries I-80/90 across the north and charges tolls, so build that into any Chicago to Ohio run. In the northern counties, lake effect snow can drop fast and heavy in winter, especially near the Michigan line, and it can shut I-94 and the Toll Road for hours.

Driver jobs in Indiana: the numbers

Median annual wage

6,360

Openings a year

The May 2025 BLS figures put Indiana's median wage for heavy and tractor-trailer drivers at $60,290 a year, compared with $58,640 nationally, across about 59,090 drivers. That is a market where a driver's time is valued above the U.S. average. Growth is slower than in some states, with projected change of 3.5 percent from 2024 to 2034, but the state still expects about 6,360 openings each year from turnover and retirements. These figures cover wage and salary drivers, not owner-operator earnings, so use them as a read on demand rather than a forecast of your settlements.

Orientation, travel and lodging

Orientation

Starts remote from your home in Indiana, finishes in person at our terminal.

Lodging

Lodging for the in-person days is covered entirely by MB Global.

Travel

MB Global arranges and pays your travel to the terminal up front, and you repay it at $50 per week.

Two stages. The first is remote, done from home before you go anywhere. The second is in person at our terminal, with lodging paid in full by MB Global. Getting there, whether you fly out of Indianapolis or drive, is arranged and paid up front by MB Global and then charged back at $50 per week. Ask the recruiter how many weeks and how it posts on the settlement.

What you'll need for the full application

The federal driver application under 49 CFR 391.21 is thorough by design. Here is everything it asks for, so you can pull it together first.

CDL information: issuing state, license number, expiration, and any other CDL or permit you have.

Where you have lived for the past 3 years, every address.

Who you worked for in the past 3 years, plus any employer you drove a commercial vehicle for in the 7 years before that, with addresses, dates and reason for leaving.

Your driving experience by type of equipment, with years on each.

Any accidents or traffic convictions in the past 3 years, and every license suspension, revocation or denial.

A DOT medical card that has not expired.

Consent to the checks in 49 CFR 391.23: your MVR, prior employers' safety and drug and alcohol testing records, and the FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse.

Indiana owner-operator FAQs

Does the Indiana Toll Road matter for OTR runs?

If your load moves between Chicago and the East, yes. I-80/90 is the Indiana Toll Road across the top of the state and it is the direct route. Tolls apply. Ask the recruiter how tolls are handled on this program before your first run.

How much does lake effect snow affect northern Indiana?

Enough to plan around. Lake effect bands off Lake Michigan can bury I-94 and the Toll Road in a few hours while Indianapolis stays dry. 511IN shows closures and conditions in real time, so check it before a winter run through the north and leave room in your schedule.

Why does Indiana pay above the national median?

The May 2025 BLS data shows a median of $60,290 for heavy and tractor-trailer drivers in Indiana, against $58,640 nationally. Demand from the distribution centers around Indianapolis and the steel and port freight up north is part of it. Those are wage and salary figures, though, not a measure of owner-operator income.

What is the actual relationship with MB Global?

Independent contractor. You are not on a payroll. You run rental equipment, run your own business within the OTR framework, and get paid on settlements. There is no lease-purchase, no ownership path for the truck and no hiring window to wait for. Indiana residents can apply in any month.

Can I start OTR from Fort Wayne or Evansville, or only Indianapolis?

Anywhere in Indiana. MB Global hires by state of residence, not by city, and there are no yards or lanes assigned by state. Fort Wayne sits on I-69, Evansville on I-69 and I-64, so your first leg to a pickup is usually short no matter where you park the truck.

How long before I am actually driving?

That depends on how fast you return the federal application and how quickly your records come back. The sequence is fixed: short form, recruiter call, full application under 49 CFR 391.21, background checks, remote orientation, then the in-person session at our terminal. Have your documents ready and it moves faster.
