Auto freight, border bridges, real winters
Owner-Operator CDL-A OTR Jobs in Michigan
Detroit builds things, and things that get built have to leave town on a truck. Add the Ambassador Bridge and the Blue Water Bridge, two of the busiest crossings between the U.S. and Canada, and freight never really stops. Grand Rapids ships furniture and food, the farm belt ships fruit, and I-75, I-94 and I-96 tie it together. Michigan drivers also know snow, which counts on every OTR route.

How our owner-operator program works
01
Independent contractor terms
This is contract work. You are an independent contractor with MB Global, running loads for settlement pay and managing your own expenses. You are not on a payroll and you keep control over your business.
02
Rental trucks, no buyout
You run rented equipment. MB Global does not do lease-purchase and will not sell you a truck. There is no balance to pay off and no ownership at the end, and no truck debt in your name.
03
2 to 3 weeks out
All loads are OTR. We suggest 2 to 3 weeks on the road, then a few days back in Michigan. Nobody here will promise you miles, a pay number or a home time schedule.
Freight corridors OTR drivers run from Michigan
Two bridges set the tone for Michigan freight. The Ambassador Bridge at Detroit and the Blue Water Bridge at Port Huron rank among the busiest truck crossings between the U.S. and Canada, and the auto plants on both sides keep parts moving across them. Away from the border, Grand Rapids adds furniture, food processing and general manufacturing, and the state's fruit belt sends produce out in season. Michigan employs about 60,800 heavy and tractor-trailer drivers in the May 2025 BLS data, one of the larger driver workforces in the states where we hire.
I-75 is the north and south backbone, from Toledo up through Detroit, Flint and Saginaw to the Mackinac Bridge. I-94 comes in from Port Huron, passes through Detroit and continues west through Kalamazoo toward Chicago. I-96 links Detroit, Lansing and Grand Rapids. I-69 enters from Indiana, runs through Lansing and Flint, and ends at Port Huron. Between them, every major Michigan city sits on an interstate.
Winter driving on Michigan interstates
Mi Drive, the MDOT site, shows conditions statewide, and in winter you should check it every time. Lake effect snow comes in fast off Lake Michigan and can bury I-94 and I-96 while Detroit stays dry. The Canada crossings at Detroit and Port Huron carry heavy truck traffic, so allow extra time near the bridges.
Michigan driver jobs and wages

Truck drivers employed
$57,180
Median annual wage

Openings a year
Michigan has a big driver workforce. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics counted about 60,800 heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers in the state in May 2025, with a median annual wage of $57,180, a bit under the U.S. median of $58,640. State projections show modest growth, from 64,400 jobs in 2024 to 65,660 by 2034, and about 6,650 openings a year as drivers retire or change careers. These figures cover wage and salary drivers, not owner-operator earnings, so read them as a measure of demand rather than a forecast of your settlements.
Orientation, travel and lodging
Orientation
Starts remote from home in Michigan, finishes in person at our terminal.
Lodging
Fully covered by MB Global for the nights you spend at in-person orientation.
Travel
Arranged and paid up front by MB Global, then charged back to you at $50 per week.
You will do part of orientation remotely and part at our terminal. For the in-person days, MB Global arranges your travel from Michigan and pays for it up front. That cost comes back out of your settlements at $50 per week, so ask the recruiter how many weeks it takes and how it is labeled. Your lodging while you are there is covered in full.
See if you pre-qualify
The pre-qualifying form is deliberately short: six questions and about a minute of your time. It is a screen, not the application, and only recruiters see it.
Your answers go only to our recruiting team. We never share them with advertising or analytics tools.
What happens next
Three steps from here to the road
1
Send the six question form, from your phone, truck stop or kitchen table.
2
A recruiter follows up with Michigan drivers who clear the requirements.
3
You complete the federal application and we set your orientation dates.
What you'll need for the full application
Past the short form, the full application is the federal FMCSA driver application, 49 CFR 391.21. Here is what it asks for:
Class A CDL information, including issuing state, number, expiration date and any other CDL or permit.
Every address you have had in the past 3 years.
All employers from the past 3 years, and any employer you drove a commercial vehicle for in the 7 years before that: names, addresses, dates, reason for leaving.
Driving experience by equipment type, with time on each.
Accidents and traffic convictions in the past 3 years, and any license suspension, revocation or denial.
A current DOT medical card; bring the physical copy.
Your consent to an MVR check, inquiries to past employers on safety and drug and alcohol testing, and a query of the FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse (49 CFR 391.23).
Michigan owner-operator FAQs
Does lake effect snow change anything about running OTR from Michigan?
It changes your planning. Snow can build fast on I-94 and I-96 on the west side of the state while the Detroit area is clear. Check Mi Drive before you leave and again before you come home. Michigan drivers tend to be good at this already, which is one reason the state produces solid OTR operators.
Will I be crossing into Canada?
Runs go where the freight is, and we do not promise any particular lane. The Ambassador Bridge and the Blue Water Bridge carry heavy truck traffic, but your loads will go where the freight goes. If a border crossing matters to you one way or the other, raise it with the recruiter when they call.
Is Michigan a big market for truck drivers?
Yes. BLS counted about 60,800 heavy and tractor-trailer drivers in Michigan in May 2025, one of the larger counts among the states where we hire, and state projections show about 6,650 openings a year through 2034. Those figures are for wage and salary drivers, not owner-operators, but they point to steady demand.
What counts as SAP history?
Having been through a substance abuse professional program under the DOT testing rules. MB Global does not bring on drivers with SAP history, and the federal application includes your consent to a Clearinghouse query, which is where that record lives. If that applies to you, this program is not a fit.
Do you take drivers from Illinois or Indiana who work in Michigan?
Indiana, yes, on the Indiana page. Illinois, no: MB Global is not bringing on drivers who live in Illinois, North Carolina, California, Oregon or Washington. For this page, you need to live in Michigan. Where you work or pick up freight does not change that; your home address is what counts.
How does the orientation trip work from Michigan?
You handle the remote part from home first. For the in-person part, MB Global arranges the trip to our terminal, whether that means flying out of Detroit or Grand Rapids or driving, and pays up front. It is then charged back at $50 per week. Lodging is fully covered. Ask the recruiter how many weeks the chargeback lasts.
