Beyond the Pike, into OTR

Owner-Operator CDL-A OTR Jobs in Massachusetts

Anyone who has pulled a trailer around Route 128 at 4 PM or fought a nor'easter on the Mass Pike has earned the right to call themselves a professional. Massachusetts freight is dense: groceries, pharmaceuticals, building materials and containers out of Conley Terminal in Boston, with the I-495 belt stacked with warehouses. From here, I-90 and I-95 lead to New York, the Midwest and the South.

How our owner-operator program works

01

Rental equipment

You operate rental equipment. MB Global does not offer lease-purchase and you are not financing a truck through us. If you are weighing a lease-purchase offer from another carrier, understand this is a different model.

02

OTR schedule

Runs are over the road, not regional New England work. The recommended cadence is 2 to 3 weeks out, then a few days at home. Miles, pay and home time are not promised.

03

Independent contractor

You contract with MB Global as an independent business owner. You are not on a payroll and you are not staff. The upside is control; the trade is that the costs of running are yours.

Freight corridors OTR drivers run from Massachusetts

Massachusetts pays well for driving work. The May 2025 BLS median wage for heavy and tractor-trailer drivers was $63,030, among the higher figures in the country, and the state projects about 8.5 percent growth in this job from 2024 to 2034. Freight is a mix of groceries and consumer goods for the Boston metro, pharmaceuticals and lab supplies from the biotech corridor, building materials, and container imports through the Port of Boston's Conley Terminal. The I-495 loop is where much of it gets staged, and Worcester and Springfield anchor the central and western parts of the state.

I-90, the Mass Pike, runs east to west from Boston through Worcester and Springfield to the New York line, and it is the road most OTR loads take out of the state. I-95 and Route 128 ring Boston, with I-95 continuing south to Providence and north to New Hampshire. I-495 forms the outer loop. I-91 runs north and south through the Pioneer Valley to Connecticut and Vermont, I-290 cuts through Worcester, and I-195 leads to Fall River and New Bedford.

Tolls and winter on Massachusetts roads

The Mass Pike uses all electronic tolling. There are no cash lanes, so an E-ZPass transponder keeps you from paying by plate. Mass511 has current conditions statewide. Nor'easters in winter can drop heavy snow fast, especially on I-90 through the Berkshires and on I-495, so check the forecast before committing to a departure.

Massachusetts truck driver job data

Median annual wage

3,910

Openings a year

In May 2025, BLS counted 30,890 heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers in Massachusetts, with a median wage of $63,030 a year (U.S.: $58,640). For 2024 to 2034, state projections show employment moving from 34,600 to 37,530, or about 3,910 openings a year. These figures cover wage and salary drivers, not owner-operator earnings. An owner-operator's take-home is set by expenses and freight, which is why we do not quote the state median as what you will make.

Orientation, travel and lodging

Orientation

Split format: a remote section first, then in-person sessions at our terminal.

Lodging

While you are at the terminal, lodging is covered in full by MB Global.

Travel

MB Global arranges and pays for travel up front. The cost is charged back on settlements at $50 per week.

From Boston, Worcester or Springfield, the first stage of orientation is remote and does not require travel. The in-person stage is at our terminal, with lodging paid in full by MB Global. Travel to get there is arranged and paid up front by MB Global and then charged back at $50 per week. Confirm with your recruiter how many weeks that covers and how it appears on settlements.

Massachusetts owner-operator FAQs

Who pays the Mass Pike tolls when I run OTR?

The advertised $2,500+ per week is take-home after all expenses. The Pike is all electronic, so carry an E-ZPass transponder to avoid pay by plate charges. Ask the recruiter how tolls are handled in the contractor arrangement so you can budget for them before your first run.

I am used to regional runs inside New England. Is OTR very different?

Yes. Regional work gets you home most nights. OTR with MB Global means loads that go to New York, the Midwest, the South or further, and the recommended rhythm is 2 to 3 weeks out before a few days at home. You need at least 2 years of OTR experience already, so you should know whether that pace works for you.

What does the Massachusetts wage data mean for an owner-operator?

Not as much as it looks. The $63,030 median from May 2025 and the projected growth from 34,600 to 37,530 jobs by 2034 describe wage and salary drivers. Your result as an independent contractor depends on your expenses, fuel, tolls and freight. Treat the numbers as a sign of demand in Massachusetts, not as a forecast of your take-home.

Does the in-person orientation take place in Massachusetts?

No. The in-person portion is at our terminal, and you travel there after completing the remote portion from home. Lodging at the terminal is paid in full. MB Global arranges and pays for the travel up front and recovers it at $50 per week through settlements, so ask how many weeks that lasts and how it is labeled.

What happens to my six answers on the short form?

They go to the recruiting team and stop there. The pre-qualifying form is not connected to advertising or analytics tools, and it is not the federal application. If your answers show you qualify, a recruiter follows up. If not, you have lost about a minute and no personal records have been handed to anyone.

Is there any way to buy the truck through MB Global?

No. Equipment is rental, and there is no lease-purchase program. You will not be making payments toward ownership of the tractor. Drivers who want to own a truck eventually will need to arrange that on their own; the MB Global arrangement is independent contractor work on rental equipment, nothing more.
