CDL A OTR for Pennsylvania

Owner-Operator CDL-A OTR Jobs in Pennsylvania

Few states put more trucks on the road than Pennsylvania. BLS counted 87,550 heavy and tractor-trailer drivers here in May 2025, and the reason is the map: the Turnpike crosses east to west, I-80 runs the northern tier, I-81 cuts diagonally from Maryland to New York, and I-78 feeds the Lehigh Valley warehouses. Start an OTR trip anywhere in the state and you are on a major corridor fast.

How our owner-operator program works

01

Contractor, not staff

You are an independent contractor with MB Global, not someone on the payroll. You run your own operation, make your own calls on the road and get paid on settlements. The truck is a rental, and there is no lease-purchase program attached to it.

02

Residency rule

Residency is firm. Pennsylvania drivers qualify. Drivers living in Illinois, North Carolina, California, Oregon or Washington do not, no matter their experience. If you split time between Pennsylvania and one of those states, bring it up with the recruiter before you apply.

03

The OTR pace

Our recommended rhythm is 2 to 3 weeks on the road, then a few days at home. A Harrisburg driver might head out on I-81 and return on the Turnpike, but the route is never fixed, and miles, pay and home time are not promised.

Freight corridors OTR drivers run from Pennsylvania

Warehouses define the Pennsylvania freight story. The Lehigh Valley along I-78 and the I-81 corridor through Harrisburg, Carlisle and Chambersburg are packed with distribution centers, because a truck leaving either one can reach much of the Northeast in a day. On the east end, Philadelphia has PhilaPort moving ocean freight. On the west end, Pittsburgh adds steel, energy and manufacturing loads. And the workforce matches: BLS counted 87,550 heavy and tractor-trailer drivers in Pennsylvania in May 2025, one of the largest driver pools in the country.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike, signed as I-76 and I-276, crosses the whole state from Ohio to New Jersey. I-80 runs the northern tier. I-81 comes up from Maryland through Harrisburg and Scranton and continues into New York. I-78 connects Harrisburg and the Lehigh Valley to New Jersey. I-95 serves Philadelphia, I-79 links Pittsburgh with Erie, and I-83 runs Harrisburg through York down to Baltimore.

Pennsylvania Turnpike tolls and winter rules

The Turnpike is tolled, collected by E-ZPass or toll by plate, so a transponder saves you hassle on I-76 and I-276. During winter storms, trucks can face restrictions on some highways, sometimes with little notice. 511PA shows current conditions and active restrictions, and it is worth checking before any winter run across the state.

Openings a year

In May 2025, BLS counted 87,550 heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers in Pennsylvania, with a median wage of $58,580 a year (U.S.: $58,640). State projections cover 2024 to 2034, with employment moving from 95,840 to 100,170, which works out to about 10,270 openings a year. One thing to keep straight: these figures cover wage and salary drivers, not owner-operator earnings. They show the scale of the Pennsylvania market, not what any individual contractor will take home after expenses.

Orientation, travel and lodging

Orientation

Partly remote, partly in person at our terminal. Both parts are required.

Lodging

Paid in full by MB Global while you attend the in-person portion.

Travel

Arranged and paid up front by MB Global, then charged back at $50 per week until the cost is recovered.

Orientation comes in two pieces. The remote piece you handle from home. The in-person piece happens at our terminal, with lodging paid in full by MB Global. Getting there is arranged and paid up front by MB Global, whether you fly from Philadelphia or Pittsburgh or drive, and the cost is charged back at $50 per week. Ask the recruiter how many weeks and how it appears on settlements.

See if you pre-qualify

Six questions. About a minute. That is all the pre-qualifying form asks, and it goes to recruiting only. The federal application comes later, after a recruiter contacts you.

What you'll need for the full application

Expect the FMCSA driver application, 49 CFR 391.21, after you talk with the recruiter. It covers seven areas.

Your Class A CDL: the state that issued it, the number, the expiration date, and any other CDL or permit you hold.

Residential addresses for the past 3 years, all of them.

Employers over the past 3 years, and any employer you drove a commercial vehicle for in the 7 years before that, with names, addresses, dates and your reason for leaving.

Your driving experience, organized by equipment type and years on each.

Accidents and traffic convictions in the past 3 years, plus any license suspension, revocation or denial.

A DOT medical card that is current on the day you submit.

Your consent for MB Global to check your MVR, your past employers' safety and drug and alcohol testing records, and the FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse, per 49 CFR 391.23.

Pennsylvania owner-operator FAQs

Do I need E-ZPass for the Pennsylvania Turnpike?

The Turnpike collects tolls through E-ZPass or toll by plate. Either works, but drivers who run I-76 and I-276 regularly usually find E-ZPass simpler. Tolls are a road cost you should raise with the recruiter, since as an independent contractor you want to know how they are handled on settlements before your first trip across the state.

What are the winter truck restrictions in Pennsylvania?

During winter storms, trucks can face restrictions on some Pennsylvania highways until conditions improve. Those restrictions can go up quickly. 511PA lists what is active. If you are finishing a run and heading home across I-80 or the Turnpike in a storm, check it before you commit to a route.

Why are there so many warehouses along I-81 and I-78?

Reach. From the Lehigh Valley or the Harrisburg, Carlisle and Chambersburg stretch of I-81, a truck can cover much of the Northeast in a day, so distribution centers have packed in. For a Pennsylvania owner-operator that means a dense cluster of shippers near home, although MB Global does not assign lanes or yards by state.

How big is the trucking job market in Pennsylvania?

Large. BLS counted 87,550 heavy and tractor-trailer drivers in the state in May 2025, and projections show employment moving from 95,840 to 100,170 between 2024 and 2034, or about 10,270 openings a year. Those are wage and salary numbers, not owner-operator figures, but they show how much freight is competing for trucks in Pennsylvania.

Is the rental truck a step toward owning it?

No. The equipment is rented, and MB Global has no lease-purchase program. Nothing you pay goes toward a purchase and there is no buyout option at the end. If you want to own a truck one day, that would be separate from this arrangement. Ask the recruiter what the rental includes so you know your costs going in.

When can I call the recruiting team?

Any day. The number is 1-888-283-6958, and the hours are Monday through Sunday, 7 AM to 5 PM. Many drivers send the six question form first and let a recruiter call them back, but if you have a question about residency, the medical card or the application, calling directly works just as well.
