Mountain drivers, open road
Owner-Operator CDL-A OTR Jobs in West Virginia
If you drive in West Virginia, you already handle what trips up a lot of OTR drivers: steep grades, fog in the hollows and snow on the Turnpike. That experience carries. The state's interstates also put you close to Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and the Washington and Baltimore markets, so the first leg of an OTR run rarely wastes a day.

How our owner-operator program works
01
Contractor, not payroll
Drivers run as independent contractors. MB Global is a business you work with, not a company you work for, and settlements are paid to you as a contractor. Your expenses and your taxes stay yours.
02
Rental trucks
There is no lease-purchase. The tractor is rental equipment that you use while contracted. MB Global is not selling you a truck, and you are not financing one through anybody here.
03
Weeks out, then home
All loads are OTR. The rhythm we suggest is 2 to 3 weeks out, then a few days back in West Virginia. Miles, pay and home time are never promised, and anyone who promises them is guessing.
Freight corridors OTR drivers run from West Virginia
West Virginia freight is heavy and varied: chemicals out of the Kanawha Valley, coal, equipment for the natural gas fields, timber and the consumer goods every state needs. The newest piece is the Eastern Panhandle. Martinsburg sits on I-81, and a growing warehouse cluster there serves the Washington and Baltimore markets a short run east. The state projects about 5.1 percent growth for heavy truck drivers from 2024 to 2034, a bit above the national rate. Not a boom, but steady.
I-64 enters from Kentucky, passes Huntington and Charleston, then shares the West Virginia Turnpike with I-77 between Charleston and Beckley before heading east into Virginia. I-77 keeps going south toward Virginia and North Carolina. I-79 connects Charleston, Morgantown and Pittsburgh. I-68 runs east from Morgantown toward Maryland, I-70 clips the Northern Panhandle at Wheeling, and I-81 carries the Martinsburg traffic north and south.
West Virginia grades, tolls, weather
WV511 has current conditions and is worth a look before every trip. The West Virginia Turnpike between Charleston and Beckley is tolled. The grades on that stretch, on I-64 toward Virginia and on I-68 east of Morgantown call for careful trip planning, and winter weather can turn a routine climb into a slow one. Leave time and watch your brakes.

The May 2025 BLS figures put the median wage for heavy and tractor-trailer drivers in West Virginia at $49,480 a year, compared with $58,640 nationally, across about 12,190 drivers. The state projects 5.1 percent change from 2024 to 2034 and about 1,410 openings each year. Those are wage and salary driver figures, not owner-operator earnings. They describe the local market for drivers on a payroll; a contractor running OTR is selling capacity into a national market instead, with results that depend on loads and costs.

Every address from the past 3 years.
Past 3 years of employers, plus any employer you drove a commercial vehicle for during the 7 years before that: names, addresses, dates, reason for leaving.
Driving experience by equipment type.
Any accidents and traffic convictions in the past 3 years, and any suspension, revocation or denial of a license.
A current DOT medical card.
Consent to the 49 CFR 391.23 checks: MVR, past employers' safety and drug and alcohol testing records, and the FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse.
West Virginia owner-operator FAQs
Is the West Virginia Turnpike toll a problem for OTR runs?
Not a problem, just a cost. I-64 and I-77 share the Turnpike between Charleston and Beckley, and it is tolled. If your run heads toward Virginia or the Carolinas, you will probably use it. Ask the recruiter how tolls are handled on the program before you take your first load through.
Does mountain driving experience count for anything?
It counts for a lot in practice, even though the requirement is simply 2 years of OTR experience. Drivers who have handled the grades on I-64, I-68 and the Turnpike in winter tend to be ready for the Rockies and the Appalachians elsewhere. WV511 is still worth checking before you leave, because conditions change fast at elevation.
Why is the median wage lower in West Virginia?
The May 2025 BLS median for heavy and tractor-trailer drivers in West Virginia is $49,480, against $58,640 nationally. That number covers wage and salary drivers working in the state. It does not describe what an owner-operator running OTR clears, since your loads come from across the country and your take-home depends on your own expenses.
Can I start from the Eastern Panhandle?
Yes. Martinsburg and the rest of the Eastern Panhandle count as West Virginia, and I-81 there puts you minutes from Maryland and Virginia. MB Global hires by state of residence with no yards or lanes assigned by state, so your first pickup could be anywhere OTR freight originates.
Does MB Global hire in the states around West Virginia?
Yes. Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and Kentucky each have their own page and the same program. The states where MB Global is not hiring right now are Illinois, North Carolina, California, Oregon and Washington. If you live in West Virginia, this page is yours; if you live across the line, use the neighbor links below.
What does the DOT medical card requirement mean?
You need a current DOT medical card on the day you apply, and the federal application under 49 CFR 391.21 asks for it. If yours is close to expiring, renew it before you send the full application so it does not hold up the paperwork. The recruiter will ask about it.
