Port to valley, Virginia OTR
Owner-Operator CDL-A OTR Jobs in Virginia
Picture your first load. It might come off a ship in Hampton Roads, roll up I-64 past Richmond and head north on I-95 toward Washington. Or it might start at the Virginia Inland Port in Front Royal and run I-81 down the Shenandoah Valley toward Tennessee. Either way, you are on one of the busiest truck routes in the East within an hour of pulling out. That reach is why OTR works from Virginia.

How our owner-operator program works
01
Independent contractor
You work with MB Global as an independent contractor, not as a driver on a payroll. You decide how you run your business, and settlements reflect the loads you move as a contractor.
02
Rental, never lease-purchase
The tractor is rental equipment. MB Global does not offer lease-purchase and you are not buying the truck through us, so there is no payoff date and no buyout to worry about.
03
OTR rhythm
All runs are over the road. The pattern we recommend is 2 to 3 weeks out, then a few days home, whether that is Norfolk, Roanoke or Northern Virginia. Nothing about miles or home time is promised.
Freight corridors OTR drivers run from Virginia
Virginia's freight starts at the water. The Port of Virginia in Hampton Roads moves containers inland by truck and rail, and some of that volume lands at the Virginia Inland Port in Front Royal, where it meets I-81 and I-66. The valley route, I-81, carries one of the heaviest truck flows in the East. Richmond and Northern Virginia are the major distribution markets, with warehouses along I-95 and I-64 serving the Mid Atlantic. According to the May 2025 BLS data, about 48,750 heavy and tractor-trailer drivers work in the state.
Here is how the map reads from a driver's seat. I-95 comes down from Washington, D.C., through Richmond to the North Carolina line. I-81 follows the Shenandoah Valley from Winchester through Roanoke to Bristol. I-64 links Hampton Roads with Richmond and Charlottesville before meeting I-81 near Staunton. I-66 joins Northern Virginia to I-81 at Front Royal. Farther south, I-77 and I-85 cover the southwest and the Southside.
Virginia tunnels and I-81 grades
VDOT 511 posts conditions for the whole state. Two local items deserve a note. The Hampton Roads tunnels carry hazmat restrictions, so a placarded load may need a different crossing. And I-81 has mountain grades through the valley and toward Bristol, which means gearing down early, watching brake temps and leaving room in winter.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics counted about 48,750 heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers in Virginia in May 2025, with a median annual wage of $56,860 against the U.S. median of $58,640. State projections look further ahead: employment is expected to grow from 58,690 in 2024 to 61,580 by 2034, with about 6,530 openings a year. The projection count and the BLS count use different definitions, which is why the totals differ. Either way, these figures cover wage and salary drivers, not owner-operator earnings.
Orientation, travel and lodging
Orientation
Partly remote from Virginia, partly in person at our terminal.
Lodging
MB Global pays your lodging in full during in-person orientation.
Travel
Booked and paid by MB Global up front, with the cost charged back at $50 per week.
Orientation runs in two parts: a remote section you complete at home, then in-person days at our terminal. Lodging at the terminal is paid in full by MB Global. Travel from Richmond, Norfolk or wherever you fly or drive from is arranged and paid up front by MB Global, then charged back at $50 per week. Ask the recruiter how many weeks that lasts and where it appears on your settlement.

Virginia owner-operator FAQs
Can I run a placarded load through the Hampton Roads tunnels?
The tunnels have hazmat restrictions, so it depends on what you are carrying and which tunnel. VDOT 511 and the tunnel operators post the rules. No endorsement is required to work with MB Global, but if you do pull a placarded load, plan your crossing before you reach the water.
How tough is I-81 for a loaded truck?
The valley has long mountain grades, especially heading toward Bristol and around Roanoke. Loaded, that means managing speed on descents and expecting slower climbs. It is also one of the busiest truck routes in the East, so traffic is part of the picture. Check VDOT 511 for construction and winter conditions before a run.
What do the Virginia employment numbers mean for me?
BLS counted about 48,750 drivers in May 2025 with a median wage of $56,860, and the state expects roughly 6,530 openings a year through 2034. Those figures cover wage and salary drivers. They tell you demand for drivers in Virginia is steady, but your income as a contractor comes from your own loads and costs.
Where do I report for orientation?
Part of orientation is remote, so you start from home. The in-person part is at our terminal, and MB Global covers the lodging in full. Your travel is arranged and paid up front, then charged back at $50 per week. The recruiter will tell you how many weeks that runs.
Does MB Global have a yard or a lane just for Virginia?
No. There are no yards, lanes or openings assigned by state. MB Global hires owner-operators who live in Virginia because that is where you are based, and your loads go wherever OTR freight goes. The state matters for residency and for where your first leg starts, not for what you haul.
Is the truck mine at the end?
No. Equipment is rental, and there is no lease-purchase on this program. You rent the tractor while you are contracted and run it OTR. There is no equity, no balloon payment and no purchase option.
