Four interstates, winter tested

Owner-Operator CDL-A OTR Jobs in Wisconsin

If you have driven I-94 from Kenosha to Hudson in January, OTR weather elsewhere will not scare you. Wisconsin drivers run I-94, I-90, I-39 and I-41 between Milwaukee, Madison, the Fox Valley, Chicago and the Twin Cities, with paper mills, dairy and warehouse freight filling trailers all year. That mix of steady loads and hard winters makes the state a solid place to base a long haul operation.

How our owner-operator program works

01

Independent contractor, start to finish

You are an independent contractor the whole way through. No payroll and no roster of hired drivers. MB Global supplies freight and the rented tractor; you supply the driving and run it as your own business.

02

Rented, with no lease-purchase

The equipment is rental. We do not offer lease-purchase and we are not in the business of selling you a truck, so you will not finish with a title or a balloon payment. If owning the truck is the goal, that is a separate path.

03

CDL A OTR, 2 to 3 weeks

All runs are CDL A OTR. We recommend 2 to 3 weeks on the road, then a few days at home in Wisconsin. Neither miles nor home time are promised; freight decides both. Talk it through with your recruiter.

Freight corridors OTR drivers run from Wisconsin

The I-94 corridor between Milwaukee and Chicago is a dense warehouse district, and it is where a lot of Wisconsin freight starts or ends. The Fox Valley around Appleton and Green Bay is paper and manufacturing country, with mills and plants that ship year-round. Dairy farms in every county need trucks every day, for feed in and milk out. The May 2025 BLS data counts about 53,330 heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers in Wisconsin, earning a median wage close to the national median.

I-94 enters from Chicago, passes Kenosha and Milwaukee, and continues through Madison and Eau Claire to the Twin Cities. I-90 links Beloit, Madison and La Crosse on its way to Minnesota. I-39 runs north from Madison through Wausau. I-41 connects Milwaukee with the Fox Cities and Green Bay, and I-43 follows the Lake Michigan shore from Milwaukee up to Green Bay.

Wisconsin winter and road notes

511 Wisconsin carries statewide conditions, and in winter it is the first thing to check. Expect snow for a good part of the year on the northern routes. In spring, frost law weight limits apply on some local roads while the ground thaws, so confirm the posted limits before you take a heavy load off the interstate.

In May 2025, BLS counted 53,330 heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers in Wisconsin. Median pay was $58,610 a year, right at the U.S. figure of $58,640. Over the decade from 2024 to 2034, state projections show driver employment moving from 55,780 to 58,060, which works out to about 5,940 openings a year. These figures cover wage and salary drivers, not owner-operator earnings. Use them as a gauge of freight demand in the state, not as an estimate of your own settlements.

Orientation, travel and lodging

Orientation

Remote first, then in person at our terminal.

Lodging

Fully paid by MB Global during in-person orientation.

Travel

MB Global arranges and pays up front, then recovers it at $50 per week. Ask how many weeks before you go.

You do the remote part of orientation from home, then travel to our terminal for the in-person part. Lodging during those days is paid in full by MB Global. The trip itself, from Milwaukee, Madison or wherever you start, is booked and paid up front by MB Global and then charged back at $50 per week on settlements. Have the recruiter confirm the number of weeks and how it is labeled.

Wisconsin owner-operator FAQs

What are frost laws, and do they affect OTR runs from Wisconsin?

In spring, as the ground thaws, some local roads in Wisconsin post reduced weight limits, often called frost laws. Interstates are not the issue; the last few miles to a shipper or receiver on a county road can be. Check posted limits and 511 Wisconsin before taking a heavy load off the interstate in spring.

Is the Fox Valley a good place to be based for OTR?

Yes. Appleton and Green Bay sit on I-41, with paper mills and manufacturing plants shipping year-round. From there I-41 drops to Milwaukee and I-94, I-43 runs the lakeshore, and I-39 is a short hop west for runs north or south. Plenty of freight starts within an hour of home.

How do the Milwaukee to Chicago warehouses affect me?

The I-94 stretch between Milwaukee and Chicago is thick with distribution centers, which means loads originate and deliver there constantly. It also means traffic. If you live in Kenosha, Racine or Milwaukee, you are already in the middle of it, and heading out on I-94 west or I-90 southwest lets you skip the Chicago congestion.

What does 5,940 openings a year mean for a Wisconsin owner-operator?

It is the state's projection for heavy and tractor-trailer driver openings each year from 2024 to 2034. The count is for wage and salary drivers, not independent contractors, so it will not tell you what you clear. It does say Wisconsin freight keeps needing drivers, and that demand is what keeps trailers loaded.

Why is the full application so long?

Because the federal government wrote it. Under 49 CFR 391.21, a motor carrier must collect your licenses, 3 years of addresses, your accident and conviction history, and employment going back 3 years plus 7 more for commercial driving. Then 49 CFR 391.23 requires checks of your MVR, past employers and the Clearinghouse. It is thorough on purpose.

What rules you out right away?

Any of these: a DUI or DWI on your record, SAP history, no current DOT medical card, fewer than 2 years of OTR experience, no Class A CDL, or living outside Wisconsin. We also do not hire drivers who live in Illinois, North Carolina, California, Oregon or Washington, which matters for anyone just across the state line near Beloit.
